Yoshiyuki Sadamoto’s concept art for the Gainax anime Blue Uru (Aoki Uru). Blue Uru was to be the sequel to Wings of Honneamise(Tsubasa no Honneamise) set 50 years in the future, but due to lack of funds and scripting issues, the project was dropped midway. It did however have new life breathed into it and was resurrected in the form of Neon Genesis Evangelion. I would have have liked to have seen Blue Uru in it’s completion.
It’s kind of a shame, because as I’ve gotten older, I have sort of a love/hate relationship with Evangelion’s characters and it’s narrative. The angst-ridden teen me reveled in it’s ability to conceive a twisted psycho drama about teens piloting giant robots. though during that time, I was still learning about story structures, and was emotionally drawn to thrillers, suspense, and other media with a heavy psychological narrative.
I’m not saying the series was bad, or that I hate it. I just simply feel now that it was lacking. I love Gainax and a good number of their creations. Wings of Honneamise still ranks high as one of my favorite animated films, even with it’s awkward moments, but I ponder on what would have Lhadatt’s world would have been like after the end of the movie.
Reblogging for the Royal Space Force love, but also to say Gainax has confirmed they’re giving the project another shot this year.
