Sure the title’s pretty silly considering how little of it actually has to do with Evangelion and it’s pretty dang long, but it’s a great read either way. Parts of it read like a real-life version of Otaku no Video and the thing’s just chock full of information about the formation of the company. The text also straightened out some things I’ve seen wrongly running around the internet; such as Wings of Honneamise being a flop (Takeda claims it wasn’t a runaway hit, but it was a moderate success.) and people saying that Gunbuster’s final episode being black and white (Takeda says that it actually cost the studio way more than was necessary!). Osamu Tezuka’s mentioned in it pretty favorably too as someone who viewed the Daicon III short at its original screening and a dude who helped them set up Daicon IV.
Though I think my favorite thing out of all of it was this quote from Toshio Okada about trying to turn the Ide Gauge from Space Runaway Ideon into a vagina during the creation of the Daicon III short:
“The Ide Gauge is just weak!” he exclaimed. “It’s got no impact, We should definitely have it form, like, a stylized version of a girl’s pussy! Now that would be impact! We need to do something that’s never been done before - otherwise, there’s no point in doing this at all!”
Anyway, like I said, the whole thing’s a pretty spectacular read and you should definitely check it out if you’re down with the japanimation shit.
